New Delhi . May 3, 2025 : Following a spell of heavy rain and strong winds on Friday morning, residents of Delhi-NCR were granted relief from the blistering May heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued weather disruptions over the next six days, including rain, thunderstorms, and cloudy skies across the region.
Weather Update Mercury Drops by 10°C, Heavy Rain Disrupts LifeThe intense downpour on Friday morning brought the maximum temperature in Delhi down to 29.1°C, 10.2°C below normal, marking the lowest daytime temperature recorded in May over the last two years. The rainfall also caused major disruptions, including the tragic loss of five lives and significant damage to infrastructure due to fallen trees and high-speed winds, which peaked at 80 km/h at Safdarjung Observatory.
According to IMD, this sudden weather shift was driven by western disturbances and a moisture-rich confluence of winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, creating ideal conditions for thunderstorms.
Delhi Records Second Highest May Rainfall in Two DecadesWithin just six hours, Delhi witnessed 77 mm of rainfall, the highest single-day May rain since May 20, 2021, when 119.3 mm was recorded due to Cyclone Tauktae. This places Friday’s rainfall as the second-highest in May since 1901, according to IMD data.
Mahesh Palawat of private forecasting agency Skymet Weather noted that continuous high temperatures in recent days had escalated humidity levels. “This atmospheric condition contributed to the formation of thunderclouds that resulted in torrential rains,” he said, adding that such weather patterns could persist for the next week.
Flight Delays and Diversions at Delhi AirportThe extreme weather impacted air travel severely. Over 500 flights were delayed, and three flights had to be diverted—two to Jaipur and one to Ahmedabad. According to Flightradar24.com, the widespread delays were primarily due to visibility issues and air traffic disruptions caused by the storm.
Outlook: Yellow Alert Issued, More Rain AheadIMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Saturday and indicated that similar weather will likely continue for the next six days in Delhi-NCR. Intermittent rain, overcast skies, and thunderstorms are expected, which may bring further fluctuations in temperature and possible disruptions.
Residents are advised to stay updated through official weather bulletins and exercise caution during outdoor activities, especially in storm-prone areas.
