Following a turbulent period of market fluctuations, US markets bounced back Wednesday after President Donald Trump announced a significant shift in his trade policy — one that raised tariffs on China while easing up on other nations. The announcement came just one week after the administration’s self-declared “Liberation Day” on trade.
Trump ’s newly announced tariffs sparked a quick reaction from China. Merely hours after Trump’s move, Beijing hit back by raising its reciprocal tariffs on American imports from 34% to 84%. This came after Washington had already enacted a 104% tariff on Chinese goods just past midnight.
The White House believes the tariff changes have triggered a domino effect worldwide. Reports suggest that over 75 countries have reached out to the administration, expressing a willingness to "negotiate a solution" to trade tensions. These nations are believed to be taking advantage of the temporary pause and reduction in reciprocal tariffs announced for non-China partners.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick framed the new policy as a targeted strategy. “This is an opportunity for the US to ‘take on China’ while giving other countries a ‘chance to negotiate,’” he said. Lutnick stressed that now is the time for these countries to prove their commitment to fair trade. "I think the real deals will take some time, but we're going to start meeting with countries," Lutnick said on Special Report Wednesday, reported Fox News.
"We are going to cover a lot of ground in these next 90 days, and we're going to start seeing countries really do the right thing for America."
In a post on Truth Social , President Trump detailed the changes, saying he was immediately increasing tariffs on Chinese imports to 125% in response to Beijing’s "lack of respect" toward the United States. “At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the USA., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable,” Trump wrote.
While tensions with China appear to be escalating, the administration is using the tariff pause on other countries as a diplomatic window. Lutnick urged global partners to step up: “We’ve got to make fair deals for America. And Donald Trump said, for the big countries, the lead negotiator of those transactions is going to be Donald Trump. He wants to do it. He wants to drive it,” Lutnick noted, describing the policy shift as a chance to "unleash" US industries and fuel “incredible growth” domestically.
“China chose the path of going against Donald Trump,” Lutnick said in sharp remarks. “Either China comes to the table with Donald Trump or they don't. But let's be clear, we are their biggest client by far, by far, by far. The American consumer buys everything from China. They can't afford to be without us."
Despite the fiery rhetoric and an intensifying tariff standoff between the two global superpowers, the administration remains focused on using the current pause to draw other nations into productive negotiations. Lutnick summed up the administration’s expectations by advising other countries to "really bring it" to the table.
