Politician and fashion designer Shaina NC was appointed the new national spokesperson of the Shiv Sena, on Monday.

The development comes as the party, led by Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde , begins its preparations for the upcoming civic body elections across the state.

The former BJP leader was appointment comes months after she was at the centre of a controversy over a derogatory remark allegedly made by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant.

Referring to her switch from the BJP, Sawant had reportedly said, “Imported 'maal' doesn't work here; only original 'maal' does.” Shaina had condemned the comment, calling it a serious instance of objectification and an attack on a woman’s dignity.

Shaina NC, formerly a BJP spokesperson, joined the Shiv Sena after the Eknath Shinde-led faction nominated her from the Mumbadevi constituency. She contested against sitting Congress MLA Amin Patel, who has held the seat since 2009, but lost.

Shaina Nana Chudasama, born on 1 December 1972, is an Indian fashion designer, politician, and social worker.

She is the daughter of Nana Chudasama, the former Sheriff of Mumbai.
