NEW DELHI: The inaugural edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) in 2023 saw international stars light up American grounds with fiery pace and crafty spin, but it was MI New York ’s Trent Boult who stood tall as the undisputed king with the ball.

Boult finished as the season’s top wicket-taker by a significant margin, bagging 22 wickets in just 8 matches, playing a pivotal role in MI New York’s title triumph. His closest competitors, Cameron Gannon and Andrew Tye of the Seattle Orcas , managed 11 wickets each — exactly half of Boult’s tally.

The Orcas had more representation in the top wicket-takers list with Imad Wasim claiming 10 wickets, alongside Washington Freedom’s left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar , who also grabbed 10.

Who's that IPL player?

Netravalkar’s 6 for 9 against Washington Freedom stood out as the best bowling figures of the season, followed by Wayne Parnell’s 5 for 20, and Mohammad Mohsin’s 4/8 for Texas Super Kings.

Boult’s 4 for 20 also featured among the best spells of the season, along with Gannon’s 4 for 23.

In terms of economy, MI New York’s Nosthush Kenjige topped the charts, conceding at just 5.73 runs per over — the only bowler in the league to maintain an economy below six (min. 24 balls). He was followed by Justin Dill (6.25), Imad Wasim (6.33), Sunil Narine (6.40) and Steven Taylor (6.61).

Only five bowlers managed to bowl a maiden over in a tournament dominated by power-hitting: Rashid Khan , Kagiso Rabada, Haris Rauf, Marcus Stoinis, and Gerald Coetzee .

The 2023 MLC season laid a solid foundation for the league’s future, with bowlers like Boult setting a high benchmark for excellence.
