KOLKATA: Mitchell Marsh hasn’t been able to bowl in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a back injury but has more than made up for that with his form with the bat. The Lucknow Super Giants ' (LSG) opener has accumulated 184 runs in four innings so far, with three half-centuries, a duck against Punjab Kings being the lone blemish.
In an exclusive chat with TOI, the Australian talks about his injury, role as an Impact Player and other things.

Excerpts:
You are in great form this season. Did you prepare for the IPL in any special way?
I prepared the way I normally would. Also, I had my back injury, and I had time to get it right and prepared accordingly.
How’s the injury now?
As of now, all good. I am not sure yet when I’ll be able to bowl though, maybe later in the tournament.
How does it feel coming in as an Impact Player?
It’s a new experience. It is every batter’s dream to bat and not have to field. So, it has been good fun so far.
Do you think the Impact Player rule is affecting all-rounders ?
No, I still think the genuine all-rounders are playing a huge role. If you are confident with an all-rounder’s four overs, then you can have that extra batter. I think there is role for all-rounders in the IPL.
Do you see the 300-run mark being breached this season?
I do hope to see a team doing that, whether it is us or any other. I just hope 300 is not scored against us. The teams are pushing the limit these days and going extremely hard from the first ball. With the game evolving, it’s really exciting to be part of that.
Digvesh Rathi has been fined twice for his sendoff routine. Was it fair on him?
I think it’s a fine line (between what’s acceptable and what’s not) as we want personalities. We ask the players to be themselves. Digvesh is coming to this IPL (as) relatively unknown and has done pretty well so far. But he will learn from getting fined. He is a really nice guy and is very excited to be playing in the IPL.
With you and Mayank Yadav not there in the attack, is LSG lacking in bite?
Every team relies on its depth. We had a few injuries to our bowling unit early on, but we will slowly get the guys back. Akash Deep came back in the last game and made a really good impact. Whenever Mayank is back, we will be at full strength. At this stage we take confidence from the fact that we have depth in our squad.
Your father (ex Australian opener Geoff Marsh) never played T20s, how does he like this format?
Yeah, he enjoys all (forms of) cricket. He loves staying involved with the game. I am sure he wishes the IPL was there when he was around.
Often great batters’ sons become fast bowlers...
There is no real reason. When I was younger, I bowled because I liked to be involved with the game. Big brother (Shaun) probably liked to bat more than bowl, so I had to bowl to him a lot.
