is constantly on the lookout for potential competitors who can ace general knowledge questions, play their tactics right and win a cash pot worth thousands of pounds. But as the receives endless applications after announcing each new series, fans often wonder what they can do to make them stand out from the crowd.
Luckily, former contestants have shared their own experiences of the application process - which sees players go head to head with one of the six if successful. One former player, known as the , hoped that her "slightly hysterical words" would help her to stand out from the rest of the crowd. The former contestant also shared a checklist of do's and don't when applying for the ITV quiz show. They said: Make your application form as detailed and personal as possible. This means including lots of fun facts about yourself, so think about the weird and wonderful things you've done and write about that," she advised. "In your audition, stay enthusiastic and excited about the show. Try to think about what producers will want to see on screen. AKA - Don't be dull."

Another player, named Marco, echoed Hannah's thoughts as he suggested: "Be lively. Ultimately, they want lively people because that makes good telly. You very rarely watch it and think 'bloody hell that guy's boring'. Just be calm, treat it as if you're sitting in the pub doing a quiz."
One more player, Tom Williamson from Liverpool, said: "They're looking for interesting things that can be said quickly. When I was on, I was mindful to make things as simple as possible." He gave an example, adding: "From: Liverpool. Job: computer programmer. Hobby: podcast about The Simpsons and modern history. What I'd do with the money: New electric car."
Posting on , another contestant shared their own experience of the application process. "From 2022, I remember the initial interview process was over the phone, so I just spoke on my headphones, did a load of filibuster whilst Googling the answers I didn't know. I made sure to not get every one correct purposefully to throw off any scent," they wrote.

"The second part was a Zoom/Teams group call, and you have 60 seconds to look into the camera and tell a bit about yourself. That is very easy to lose yourself, and what some other people ended up doing is talking about all of the things they DIDN'T like doing, and this didn't work out for them on the call.
"Pro tip, I did the video call on my laptop, so propped out of view and rested just on the laptop screen, was my phone with points that I'd thought about earlier, hence why I could say everything confidently without stuttering and umming and arring.
"Aside from that, just be yourself, be confident, be fun, don't be a miserable sod otherwise they will choose someone else - Yes, it stirs a reaction from commentary in this sub (or in my case on Twitter) by being eccentric, but it worked for me personally."
