A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, where a woman, distressed by circumstances, fed poison to her six-year-old daughter and then attempted suicide by consuming the same poison. The act, which has sent shockwaves through the community, is believed to be driven by crippling financial stress.
The tragedy occurred while the husband, a mango trader, was away in Banaras on business. Both the mother and child were rushed to Lalganj Trauma Center. While the mother was stabilized and discharged after first aid, the daughter’s condition worsened—leading to her urgent transfer to Prayagraj via the Medical College.
A Routine Call Turned FatalAccording to police sources, the husband, Amit Singh, revealed that he had received a call from his wife Kalpana while en route to Banaras. They exchanged a few words—nothing alarming. But just hours later, he was informed that his wife had attempted suicide after allegedly poisoning their daughter Mohini.
A bottle of pesticide, normally kept at home for spraying on mango crops, was reportedly used in the incident.
Just Days After a Similar HorrorWhat makes this incident even more disturbing is that it mirrors a tragedy from just five days ago. In Devghat, another mother had thrown her 14-month-old daughter into the Sai River. Police were still investigating that case when this new incident struck, raising urgent concerns over mental health and domestic pressures.
Financial Struggles May Be the Root CausePreliminary police investigations point to economic hardship as the likely motive. Amit Singh runs a seasonal business dealing in mango orchards and had gone to sell mangoes when the tragedy occurred. Financial pressures at home may have pushed Kalpana over the edge.
Ongoing InvestigationPolice are continuing their inquiry, including statements from neighbors and relatives. The community remains in shock, and questions are being raised about the lack of mental health support and financial safety nets for families in distress.
