The Income Tax Department has amended the form for filing returns. According to those amendments, the system also needs to be changed. Therefore, the Income Tax Department has decided to extend the last date for filing ITR (ITR deadline extension). This will make it easier for everyone to fill the correct form. Let us know what changes the Income Tax Department has made.
This is big news for those filing income tax returns. The Income Tax Department has extended the last date for filing returns for the financial year 2024-25 by one and a half months (ITR filing deadline extended). Let us know till when and why this date has been extended.
Till when can I file my return
The last date for filing returns for the financial year 2024-25 (Income Tax Return FY 2024-25) or assessment year 2025-26 was 31 July 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said on Tuesday that this date has been extended by one and a half months. That is, now you can file returns till 15 September 2025 .
Why did the government extend the last date for return filing
CBDT has said that many important amendments have been made in the income tax return form. According to it, more time is needed for changes in the system. Therefore, the last date for filing returns has been extended. This will help everyone in correct filing.
For general category taxpayers, the last date for filing returns is usually 31st July. Apart from salaried people, these also include those whose accounts do not require auditing. Now they too will be able to file returns till 15th September 2025. Filing returns after this date will attract a penalty of up to Rs 5000.
What the CBDT said
The CBDT has said that there are some amendments in the ITRs notified for the assessment year 2025-26 (financial year 2024-25). These amendments have been made with the aim of simplifying compliance, increasing transparency and correct reporting.
Due to these amendments, additional time will be required for system development, integration and testing. Apart from this, the credits of TDS filed till 31 May 2025 will be visible in early June. This will reduce the actual time for return filing. Keeping these things in mind and for the convenience of taxpayers, the last date for tax filing is being extended from 31 July to 15 September 2025 .
Vivek Jalan, partner at tax consultancy firm Tax Connect Advisory Services LLP, welcomed the decision, saying that every year there are changes in the ITR structure, which means it takes time for their utilities to be published. Every year TDS/TCS credits are reflected by June 15, which means practically only 1.5 months are available to file such ITRs. So extending the last date to September 15 this year is a good move.
Jalan said that it would be better if the due date for filing ITR is permanently extended to at least August 31. This new date can be included from the beginning in the new Income Tax Bill 2025, which is going to be implemented from April 1, 2026.
