The one-child policy in China has worsened the sex ratio and there are fewer brides for boys. Now Chinese citizens are looking for brides in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh where agents arrange marriages for daughters of poor families for money. Girls are brought here by luring them with the promise of a better life but they are sexually exploited.
China had a one-child policy for decades. The government put pressure on the public to control the population. In such a situation, families who want a boy do not want a girl child. The sex ratio in China has deteriorated completely. In the year 2000, there were 121 boys for every 100 girls.
There are a large number of boys in China who want to get married but are unable to find a girl. According to a report, between 2020 and 2050, about 3 to 5 crore men in China will never be able to get married due to the bad sex-ratio.
Girls are searched in South Asian countries
In such a situation, Chinese citizens are looking for brides in other countries. A large number of Chinese citizens are getting married in poor South Asian countries including Pakistan and Bangladesh, which is called cross border marriage. A whole network works in these countries to provide brides to Chinese youth.
Agents look for families who are willing to marry their daughters to Chinese citizens in return for money. Then the girl is married to a Chinese citizen. The girls are later taken to China. In this process, Chinese citizens pay a lot of money to the agents.
Girls are brought to China by telling lies
Agents bring girls to China by promising them good jobs, a better life, or marriage, but there they are sold for forced marriage or sexual exploitation. Not only this, agents also snatch the papers of the girls.
Many such cases have come to light where these girls are sent to some village in China. There, they are sexually exploited. If the girl tries to escape, the police consider her an illegal immigrant and make her an accused.
China's image is being tarnished due to this illegal marriage process and smugglers. America is constantly putting pressure on China by citing such cases.
Chinese citizens are becoming victims of fraud on social media
The biggest problem today is that there are many dating platforms on social media where fake advertisements of brides are shown. In this, a foreign bride is promised, Chinese citizens spend a lot of money on these dating apps. But they do not realize that they have become victims of fraudsters.
According to a report by Beijing News, last year some social media posts demanded 2 lakh yuan (about 24 lakh rupees) to marry a young girl from Laos. Some people also got trapped in this fraud. Taking cognizance of these cases, the Chinese government has advised citizens to avoid online dating and fake marriage proposals.
Bangladeshi citizens should avoid coming to Bangladesh and getting married: China
The Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh has issued a warning to its citizens. The embassy warned that according to Chinese law, no person or institution is allowed to act as a broker or middleman for foreign marriages.
Do not get confused by content such as 'cross-border romance', especially on social media and short video platforms, and fall into cases of illegal marriages or human trafficking. According to the embassy, Chinese citizens should avoid any commercial or illegal marriage agents and be cautious of online love traps.
