Michael Alaimo dead: Space Jam and China Syndrome actor passes away after 60-year career

Hollywood actor Michael Alaimo has died at the age of 86, his family have confirmed

Michael Alaimo, who's best known for his roles in Space Jam and the Oscar-nominated The China Syndrome, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 2. Michael's , longtime TV PR and communications executive Gabriella Alaimo Thomas, confirmed the death of her famous father to this week.

Although the cause of Michael's death hasn't been disclosed as of yet, an official statement revealed that Michael, “passed away peacefully.”

Michael's career spanned avant-garde theater, political activism, and a steady stream of film and TV appearances across six decades. Michael featured in dozens of popular films and shows, and of his list of credits, Space Jam, Mr. Mom, The China Syndrome, and All I Want For , are some of his most recognised projects.

In Space Jam, Michael portrayed a doctor, appearing beside Michael Jordan, Wayne Knight, and Bill Murray. Along with starring in many movies, he's made many appearances on television, such as in the series, Cheers, The Wonder Years, Scrubs, Barney Miller, Mr. Belvedere, Hill Street Blues and Betty White’s Off Their Rockers.

Michael studied theater at Brooklyn College and from 1961 to 1964, he was involved in Joseph Papp's NY Shakespeare in Central Park, leading a commedia dell’arte troupe. Michael also dabbled in political activism with East Harlem’s highly influential Gut Theatre.

After moving to San Francisco, California, Michael toured with the anti-war show F.T.A. before he moved to Los Angeles in 1973. It was while he was in Los Angeles that Michael got his big break as he landed his early roles, The Six Million Dollar Man, Cannon and Harry O.

Along with starring in many movies, he's made many appearances on television, such as in the series, Cheers, The Wonder Years, Scrubs, Barney Miller, Mr. Belvedere, Hill Street Blues and Betty White’s Off Their Rockers.

Michael's final role was in a biographical drama titled Sinatra! Eternity, which also featured Michael Madsen, Harry Dean Stanton and Eric Roberts.

Michael's legacy is being kept alive by his wife Louise, daughters Gabrielle and Giovanna, son-in-law David and granddaughters Isabella and Malia.
