They might sound scary, but ‘ghost lashes’ are an emerging beauty trend – and no it doesn’t involve painting them white. Instead, the trend refers to opting for a much softer mascara (or even no-mascara look). Now, some on social mediaare arguing that it’s another recession indicator.
If you’ve been scrolling through social media over the past few months, you’ll probably have seen several prominent celebrities like Dua Lipa, Hailey Bieber and Addison Rae sporting very pared-back eye looks. It’s also gained traction on TikTok, with the trend gaining millions of views over the past month.
But while many online have been celebrating the more lowkey look, with some even joking it’s “a win for the lazy girl community”, others think it’s more closely linked to a recession. “Ghost lashes really are grasping,” one TikTok user said. Another wrote in a caption: “It’s a trend to cover up how less people can afford to spend more money on themselves have to resort to strategic expenditure.”

However, Saffron Hughes, professional makeup artist at FalseEyelashes.co.uk, believes it’s closely linked to an increased emphasis on skincare and hair health – which has resulted in simpler makeup looks.
She says: “There’s a growing awareness around lash care. Clients are asking how to strengthen their natural lashes or give them a break from daily mascara. Ghost lashes meet that need. They work with your natural lashes rather than against them.”
Additionally, the look also wears better in the UK’s recent spate of hot weather. “In heat, mascara can smudge or feel sticky,” she adds. “Ghost lashes are breathable. They’re ideal for beach days, city heat, or just a more laid-back vibe.”
How to recreate the look at homeSaffron recommends first starting off with a completely clean base. She says: “Any leftover product or oil will stop them from curling properly. Micellar water is ideal as it cleans without irritating the eyes.”
Equally, since the look relies on healthy well-conditioned lashes, Saffron suggests using a serum to help, which can add “strength, shine and flexibility.” She adds: “I tell clients to use it every night for at least four weeks. That consistency makes all the difference.”
The next step is to go in with your lash curler. Saffron says to aim for a “soft lift” rather than a more dramatic bend. She explains: "Start at the base and pulse gently upwards. Heated curlers give a smoother result, but even a classic curler will work if you’re careful.”

After this, you can go in with a mascara if you wish. While some people are skipping lash-defining tool entirely, Saffron adds that you can still add a little definition by opting for a clear or brown formula. She says: “Apply from the roots to the middle of the lashes only. It stops the tips from looking too thick.”
Of course, the rest of your eye makeup is important, too. Saffron suggests staying clear of bold eyeshadow or eyeliner, which “will distract from the softness of ghost lashes”. If you still want to add something a little extra, she recommends tapping a small amount of cream highlighter into the inner corners to brighten the eye without overpowering it.
However, if it’s all sounding like a bit too much effort for everyday, Saffron says you can also opt for a lash lift and tint which can give you a curl and colour which lasts for weeks.
She says: “I recommend it to clients going on holiday or anyone wanting less maintenance.”
