New Delhi: The government is likely to conduct the Situation Assessment Survey of Agricultural Households, along with the All India Debt & Investment Survey (AIDIS), in 2026, said a government official.
These will form part of the 81st round of the National Sample Survey (NSS) and are scheduled to run from July 2026 to June 2027, the official told ET.
The agricultural households survey will collect information on farm and non-farm business receipts and expenditures, access to different schemes and technical advice on farming, sources and purpose of loans, and level of indebtedness, among other aspects, across states and union territories.
The findings will help shape agricultural policymaking and evaluate the progress in farmer welfare from the last survey conducted in 2019.
Agricultural households are identified based on the value of agricultural production from self-employment activities in the 365 days preceding the survey date.
The two surveys were last conducted together in 2019 during the 77th NSS round by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. It found the average monthly income of agricultural households to be ₹10,218. The largest share was of wages (₹4,063), followed by net receipts from crop production (₹3,798).
The debt and investment survey, which collects information on household assets and liabilities, will be conducted every five years, the official said.
According to AIDIS 2019, the average value of assets per household in rural areas was ₹15.9 lakh, with ₹22.1 lakh for cultivator households and ₹7.9 lakh for non-cultivator households. In urban areas, the average asset value was ₹27.2 lakh. It was ₹41.5 lakh for self-employed households and ₹22.1 lakh for other households.
Currently, as part of the 80th NSS round, a health survey is underway, gathering data on health expenditure, including costs for treatments, types of ailments and other health-related details.
