Modi's hands are tied: Rahul Gandhi claims prime minister cannot stand up to Trump because of the ongoing investigation against Adani

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot stand up to US President Donald Trump because of the ongoing investigation against Adani.

The Congress leader on social media platform X said that "One threat is to expose the financial links between Modi, AA, and Russian oil deals," adding that the prime minister's hands are tied.

This comes amid Trump's tariff on India, which has been placed at 25 per cent. However, on Tuesday, he said Indiahas not been a good trading partner, adding that he would increase the tariff charged on imports from India from the current rate "very substantially" over the next 24 hours, given India's continued purchases of Russian oil.

"They're fueling the war machine, and if they're going to do that, then I'm not going to be happy," Trump told CNBC in an interview. He said that the main sticking point with India was that its tariffs were too high.

This comes a day after Trump stated that he will "substantially" raise US tariffs on India, accusing it of buying massive amounts of Russian oil and selling it for big profits.

Meanwhile, India's Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued late on Monday that "it is revealing that the very nations criticising India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia".

"It is unjustified to single out India," the ministry said. It said the EU conducted 67.5 billion euros ($78.02 billion) in trade with Russia in 2024, including record imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) reaching 16.5 million metric tons.

The United States, the statement said, continues to import Russian uranium hexafluoride for use in its nuclear power industry, palladium, fertilisers and chemicals. It did not give a source for the export information.

Trump's Pakistan ceasefire claims

On July 25, Gandhi had launched a scathing attack on the government over Trump repeating his claims about bringing about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, saying there is something fishy as the American leader has made the statement "25 times". He also raised the matter in the Lok Sabha saying Modi needs to say 'Trump is a liar' if he was not involved in the ceasefire. "How can the prime minister make a statement. "Trump got it done, he can't say that. But that is the truth. Trump got the ceasefire done, the whole world knows. That is the reality."

The Adani case

In November 2024, US authorities indicted Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, alleging that they paid bribes to secure Indian power supply contracts, and misled U.S. investors during fund raises.

The SEC summoned Adani and his nephew, alleging they paid millions in bribes to Indian officials while misrepresenting antibribery compliance during a $750 million Adani Green Energy bond offering.

The Securities and Exchange Commission had in its indictment said that Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and six others paid $265 million in bribes to Indian state government officials between 2020 and 2024.

The payments were allegedly made to secure lucrative solar power contracts projected to yield $2 billion in profits over 20 years.

The SEC claims Adani Green Energy Ltd raised $2 billion from American and foreign investors based on false statements.

“Adani Green and the defendants also emphasised to underwriters and potential investors that Adani Green had implemented robust anti-bribery and anticorruption processes and that Adani Green was a leader in India in good corporate governance. None of this was true," the SEC said.

The DoJ alleges the company concealed ongoing bribery allegations while raising funds from American investors, violating the US Securities Act.
