Arsenal embark upon what many areThe French side are synonymous with being in the late stages of the competition.
In fact, they have been in the final in six of the last eight seasons. That is a ridiculous level of consistency and showcases the magnitude of the task Renee Slegers’ side have in front of them this coming weekend.
To have the best chance, it was believed Arsenal would have to at least draw the first leg, and in a dream scenario, somehow win the clash. Taking a one-goal deficit to France, needing to win is exactly why the match is being coined as such a hardship. Yet there is still confidence in the team and the coach to go and produce something very special.
"We are not happy with the result because, like I said, we did really well finally getting the equaliser, and that was the least we wanted, and after that goal we felt like we could potentially score another one," Slegers said in the post-match press conference. "I think as the game turned out, especially in the second half, a draw or a win was what we what we went for.
"I think Arsenal has done it before against Lyon away and has won with big numbers, so it’s gonna be a pitch, 11 vs 11, good grass, and we have all the opportunities to win that game next week."
What Arsenal have to do is be clinical when the few chances they might get come along.
The Champions League remains the final chance for silverware this season, and an unlikely turnaround would be the best preparation for taking on either one of Barcelona or Chelsea in the final. For now, however, that remains difficult to foresee.
