Pune: The Pune Rural police on Sunday arrested a 27-year-old Bangladeshi woman from Junnar who was staying in the country illegally with her husband for the last 10 years.

An officer from the Junnar police said the search is on for the woman's husband, who has not returned home since March 30.

"We recovered the woman and her husband's Indian passports, PAN cards, voting cards, and the woman's birth certificate from a municipal corporation in West Bengal," the officer said.

He said probationary deputy superintendent of police Bhagryashri Dhirbassi received a tip-off about Bangladeshi nationals staying in Junnar illegally.

"A police team led by assistant inspector Prakash Pawar raided the spot. They found a woman with an 11-month-old boy. During questioning, the woman admitted to having entered India illegally with her husband about 10 years ago," the officer said.

"The woman told us that after reaching India, the couple managed to obtain the documents so they could stay in the country," he said.

The officer said the woman also told the police that her husband had not returned home since March 30.

"A search is on for her husband," he said.

The couple was booked under relevant sections of the Passport (Entry to India) Act, the Foreigners Act, and relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
